The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two men for allegedly being in possession of a suspected human skull following a joint intelligence driven operation with the Oyo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun, in Ijio, Iwajowa Local Government Area of the state.
The arrests were disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, who said the operation was carried out after security agencies received credible intelligence that one of the suspects was in possession of an object believed to be a human skull.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbenga, ordered a coordinated operation involving police operatives and Amotekun personnel, leading to the arrest of Shittu Isah of Kajola Area, Ijio.
The police said the suspected human skull was recovered during the operation and taken into custody as an exhibit.
Olayinka stated that during interrogation, Isah allegedly confessed to exhuming the suspected human skull from a Muslim burial ground in Ijio.
He added that the suspect also admitted he did not act alone, leading to the arrest of another suspect, Tunde Ajibade, who is currently assisting investigators.
“During interrogation, Shittu Isah confessed to having exhumed the suspected human skull from a Muslim burial ground in Ijio. He further confessed that he did not act alone, a development that led to the arrest of one Tunde Ajibade, who is currently assisting the police with ongoing investigations,” the statement said.
The command disclosed that the recovered exhibit has been preserved for forensic examination to determine its nature, while investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence, determine the motive and identify any other persons connected to the case.
Reaffirming the command’s commitment to tackling crime, Olayinka said the police would ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
He also urged residents of the state to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information to strengthen efforts at preventing and combating crime across Oyo State.
