Severe traffic congestion has continued to disrupt movement along both the inbound and outbound sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, particularly around the Sinoma, El-Dorado and Ibafo axis, following a multiple road traffic crash recorded on the outbound carriageway.
The traffic advisory was contained in a statement issued on Monday, August 25, 2026, by the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) through its Public Relations Officer, Commander Babatunde Akinbiyi.
The crash, which occurred around Sinowa on the outbound Lagos-Ibadan roadway, has caused significant obstruction to the free flow of traffic, with the situation reportedly worsened by motorists attempting to leave their designated lanes and cross into the opposite carriageway.
TRACE said the indiscriminate movement of vehicles into the inbound Lagos section had affected traffic in both directions, resulting in severe gridlock along the busy corridor.
“Severe traffic congestion is currently being experienced along both the inbound and outbound sections of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, particularly around the Sinoma/El-Dorado-Ibafo axis,” the statement said.
The agency added that traffic was still building up from the Interchange axis towards Lagos on the inbound carriageway, while the outbound section towards Ibadan was also experiencing significant traffic build-up.
The development comes a day after the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed a fatal multiple crash around Kara, Ibafo, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. According to the FRSC, seven people died while two others sustained injuries in the crash involving a white HOWO CNG truck, a white MACK trailer and a Mitsubishi Canter.
The FRSC said the crash occurred at about 12:03 a.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026, and identified speed violation as the probable cause, subject to further investigation. The injured victims were taken for medical attention, while the deceased were evacuated by the Ogun State Ambulance Service.
The Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Oludare Ogunjobi, subsequently urged motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, to avoid excessive speed, maintain safe following distances and remain vigilant while driving.
TRACE, meanwhile, appealed to motorists still trapped in the traffic to remain patient and cooperate with traffic management officials deployed to the affected areas.
The agency warned motorists against driving against traffic and other forms of lane indiscipline, stressing that motorists must obey the directives of personnel from TRACE, FRSC and the Nigeria Police Force working to restore normal traffic flow.
“Motorists travelling along the corridor and still held up in traffic are advised to exercise patience, avoid driving against traffic, refrain from lane indiscipline and strictly adhere to the directives of traffic management personnel,” TRACE said.
To ease the pressure on the affected corridor, TRACE advised motorists who can do so to consider alternative routes and allow sufficient travel time.
The suggested alternatives include the Old Lagos-Sango-Ifo-Ewekoro-Abeokuta Expressway, Sagamu-Sotubo-Ogijo-Ikorodu Expressway and the Ijebu-Ode-Epe Expressway.
The agency urged motorists to remain calm and cooperate with traffic management officials as efforts continue to normalise traffic movement along both carriageways.
