The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, has said the Assembly’s resolution on the inclusion of sign language interpreters in government programmes is already yielding positive results.
Elemide made this known when the Chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Nigeria, Comrade Ogunbanwo Oluwaseun, led members of the association on a courtesy visit to the Speaker at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The Speaker described the development as a significant outcome of the Assembly’s legislative intervention, stressing that the legislature remained committed to promoting inclusive governance and ensuring that persons living with hearing impairment were not excluded from government activities.
The association had commended the Assembly for its resolution of July 29, 2025, saying the decision had brought measurable improvements in the recognition and inclusion of sign language interpreters at government programmes in the state.
The resolution, referenced as H.R. No. 132/OG/2025 and titled, “Call for the Inclusion of Sign Language Interpretation in State Government Programmes to Promote Inclusivity for Persons with Hearing Impairment,” called for the engagement of certified sign language interpreters at executive, legislative and judicial public events.
The measure was aimed at ensuring that residents with hearing impairment could effectively participate in public programmes and have equal access to information provided by government.
Elemide said the progress recorded since the passage of the resolution demonstrated the importance of legislative action in addressing issues affecting vulnerable and often underrepresented members of society.
He reaffirmed the Assembly’s readiness to support policies and initiatives that promote equal opportunities, accessibility and participation for all residents of the state.
Meanwhile, the Speaker also received members of the Ogun State chapter of Wazobia Widows Welfare Association, led by its State Coordinator and spokesperson, Mrs. Adesola Oyebade.
The association sought the support and partnership of the Assembly for the forthcoming inauguration of its new executive members.
Oyebade also appealed to the state government, through the Assembly, to provide more benefits and opportunities for widows across Ogun State.
She specifically called for the establishment of a functional skills acquisition centre where widows could acquire practical skills, become economically independent and improve the welfare of their families.
