In a jaw-dropping UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg clash at the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners ran riot over defending champions Real Madrid with a thumping 3-0 victory — thanks to a pair of sensational free-kicks from Declan Rice and a slick finish by Mikel Merino.

The deadlock was broken in the 58th minute when Rice curled a stunning free-kick into the top corner, leaving Thibaut Courtois helpless and the Emirates in ecstasy. Just 12 minutes later, the England midfielder repeated the feat — another free-kick in the 70th minute, again nestling into the top corner.

“I’ve been working on those for months,” Rice said with a grin after the match. “To see both go in, especially in a game like this — it’s a dream come true.”

Real Madrid were rocked. Before they could regroup, Arsenal delivered the killer blow in the 75th minute. A brilliant pass from 18-year-old wonderkid Lewis-Skelly sliced through Madrid’s defense, finding Mikel Merino, who calmly slotted home to make it 3-0.

“I saw the space, and Lewis-Skelly picked me out perfectly,” Merino said. “We knew we had to be brave tonight — and we were.”

Madrid looked lost, their usually dependable midfield bypassed, and their attack stifled by Arsenal’s relentless pressing.

“They played with more fire, more speed, more belief,” said Real boss Carlo Ancelotti. “We have to respond — or we’re out.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised the unity and brilliance of his side: “This was one of the most complete performances we’ve produced. Rice was exceptional, but the entire squad earned this moment.”

With a commanding 3-0 lead heading to the Santiago Bernabéu, Arsenal are within touching distance of the semi-finals — but the Gunners know the battle is only halfway done.

Still, April 8th, 2025, will be remembered as the night Arsenal humbled the kings of Europe.
