The Ogun State House of Assembly has called on local government chairmen to intensify efforts at improving their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and eliminating financial leakages across their councils.

This charge was issued by the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Jemili Akingbade, during an oversight visit to Sagamu and Obafemi-Owode Local Government Areas.

The visit is part of the Assembly’s legislative oversight responsibilities aimed at promoting accountability and effective governance at the grassroots.

Hon. Akingbade emphasized the urgency of adopting innovative strategies to increase revenue at the local level. “We expect council chairmen to look inward and develop creative mechanisms for boosting IGR. It’s time we moved beyond the usual to enhance financial sustainability in our LGs,” he stated.

He further directed the council administrators to ensure thorough documentation and strict compliance with due process in the execution of all projects.

According to him, “Every project—whether ongoing or completed—must have proper records, including bills of quantity, cost breakdowns, and evidence of necessary approvals.”

Akingbade was accompanied by fellow lawmakers: Honourables Sobunkola Olakunle, Adegoke Adeyanju, Oluseun Adesanya, Dickson Awolaja, Lukman Adeleye, Damilola Soneye, and Yusuf Sherrif.

The Committee also mentioned the importance of synergy between elected officials and career officers in executing budgetary plans effectively.

In his response, the Executive Chairman of Sagamu Local Government, Mr. Jubril Odulate, appreciated the visit, describing it as a vital democratic tool. “Oversight like this promotes transparency and compels us to remain accountable to the people we serve,” he said.

Similarly, Mr. Adesina Ogunsola, Executive Chairman of Obafemi-Owode Local Government, reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to developmental initiatives tailored to community needs. “Our focus remains on delivering people-centered projects that reflect transparency and good service delivery,” he assured.
