In a stunning display of endurance and athleticism, Team Ogun’s Aderonke Akanbi has set a new national record in the 3000m steeplechase, clocking 10:28.04 to surpass the previous National Sports Festival mark of 11:07.

The feat, recorded during the ongoing Gateway Games 2024 in Ogun State, has not only earned her another gold medal, but firmly established her as a rising force in Nigerian athletics.

Akanbi had earlier clinched gold in the women’s 1500m final, bringing her medal tally to two, and drawing national attention to her remarkable form.

“I came prepared, and I’m glad the hard work paid off,” an elated Akanbi told reporters after the race. “Breaking the record means a lot to me and I dedicate this to my coaches, my state, and everyone who believes in me.”

Her performance left the crowd at the stadium in awe, as she maintained a commanding lead throughout the race before crossing the finish line to a thunderous ovation.

Officials from the athletics federation described her run as “phenomenal” and “a glimpse of the future of Nigerian distance running.”

“This is what the National Sports Festival is about — discovering and celebrating talent like Aderonke’s,” said one of the event organizers, praising the homegrown athlete’s resilience and dedication.

Akanbi’s achievement has brought immense pride to Team Ogun, adding to the host state’s growing medal count and reaffirming its investment in grassroots sports development.
