At least twenty-one people have been feared dead after a ghastly accident sparked a fire outbreak along the Zaria–Kano highway in Kano State on Sunday morning.
The tragic crash occurred around 8:23 a.m. near Kasuwar Dogo, Dakatsalle, involving a Toyota Bus with registration number KMC 171 YM and a DAF trailer marked GWL 422 ZE.
According to a statement by the Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), CRC Abdullahi Labaran, preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the bus violated traffic rules by taking an unauthorized route, which led to a head-on collision with the trailer.
The impact triggered a fire outbreak that consumed both vehicles.
Out of the 24 people involved in the incident, 21 lost their lives as the vehicles went up in flames, while three others sustained injuries of varying degrees.
“The burnt bodies of the deceased were evacuated to Nassarawa Hospital Mortuary in Kano, while the injured victims were taken to Garun Malam General Hospital for treatment,” the statement added.
FRSC operatives, alongside the Nigeria Police Force, successfully cleared the wreckage from the road, and normal traffic flow has since been restored.
The Sector Commander of Kano FRSC, Corps Commander MB Bature, described the incident as unfortunate and extended condolences to the affected families.
He also warned motorists to avoid dangerous driving practices, especially route violations, which often lead to avoidable loss of lives.
