The management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta has threatened to take legal action against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over what it described as a violent and unlawful invasion of its premises.
In a statement issued on Sunday, OOPL alleged that more than 50 heavily armed operatives, led by an officer identified as “Olapade,” stormed the complex at about 2am on August 10, 2025.
The operatives, believed to be from EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, were said to have fired shots into the air, threatened to kill guests, and caused panic that left several people injured as they tried to flee.
According to OOPL’s Managing Director, Mr. Vitalis Ortese, the EFCC operatives claimed they were acting on intelligence related to a private event at the complex’s amusement park.
He stated that the police had allegedly been informed about the operation.
However, Ortese said police officers stationed at the gates, along with personnel from Kemta Police Station invited by the event organisers, denied any knowledge of the raid and confirmed that no search warrant was presented.
“This was a blatant invasion of private property, an infringement of our corporate rights, and a violation of the rights of law-abiding citizens gathered for a legitimate event,” the statement read, adding that the party in question had been publicly advertised for days before the raid.
The management disclosed that an internal investigation had commenced and petitions would be sent to the EFCC, the police, and the Department of State Services. It demanded a public explanation and apology from the Commission, warning that legal redress and sanctions would follow if its demands were ignored.
Meanwhile, the EFCC confirmed the midnight sting operation in a statement posted on its X and Instagram accounts. The Commission said it arrested 93 suspected internet fraudsters and recovered 18 vehicles along with several mobile devices.
The party, tagged “Wet and Rave: Splash Extravaganza” and featuring controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, was reportedly moved at the last minute from Funturf inside the MKO Abiola Sports Arena to Rounda Funspot within the OOPL premises.
The EFCC did not address OOPL’s allegations regarding the absence of a warrant, the reported shooting, or injuries sustained during the operation.
