The All Progressives Congress (APC), Ogun State chapter, on Tuesday announced the suspension of a former governor of the state and senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, alongside his ally, Kunle Folarin.
Their suspension, according to the party, followed allegations of misconduct and anti-party activities levelled against them.
The Director of Publicity of the APC in Ogun State, Nuberu Olufemi, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists in Abeokuta after the State Working Committee (SWC) meeting presided over by the party chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi.
Olufemi explained that the decision was taken after reviewing the reports of the investigation and disciplinary committees set up by Ward 4 and Ward 6 in Sagamu Local Government Area, where Daniel and Folarin belong.
The statement read in part, “Ward 4, Sagamu Local Government, set up a disciplinary committee on the alleged misconduct bordering on anti-party activities committed by Senator Gbenga Daniel. Similarly, Ward 6 constituted a committee to probe Hon. Kunle Folarin on allegations of gross misconduct and anti-party activities.”
According to the party, the two members were invited to appear before the committees to defend themselves but failed to honour the invitations.
“In view of their deliberate and unexplained absence, the committees deliberated as scheduled, heard from the available witnesses, considered documentary evidence and deliberated on the allegations,” the statement added.
The committees also alleged that Daniel and his ally attempted to pressure party members to withdraw petitions filed against them and harassed others cooperating with the disciplinary process.
Olufemi said, “Copies of the letters of indefinite suspension were forwarded to the state chairman for consideration. The State Working Committee has ratified the suspensions, demonstrating the party’s commitment to discipline and respect for its constitution.”
