A 30-year-old woman, identified as Adama Hannafi, from Auyakawa village in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has reportedly taken her own life by hanging in Sumore Village.
Confirming the tragic incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa State Police Command, DSP Shi’isu Adam, said the incident occurred around 3pm on October 7, 2025.
According to him, the police received a distress report that a woman had been found hanging from a tree in the area.
“A team from Yalwawa Division rushed to the scene and found her lifeless body, which was carefully lowered for examination. No foul play was suspected,” Adam said in a statement released to journalists in Dutse, the state capital.
He explained that the body was later taken to Dutse General Hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed her death. Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased had been battling mental illness before the incident.
Adam said, “Preliminary investigations showed that Adama had been struggling with mental illness before the incident. She leaves behind her husband and four children.”
The police spokesperson described the case as a sad reminder of the growing challenge of mental health issues in the state, urging residents to always report early signs of distress or unusual behaviour to the nearest police station or health facility for immediate intervention.
“This tragic event highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and support for mental health challenges in Jigawa communities,” he added.
The Command further appealed to members of the public to remain alert and show compassion towards those struggling with emotional or mental distress.
In his reaction, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Dahiru Muhammad, expressed deep sadness over the incident and urged families to pay close attention to relatives showing signs of mental instability.
He also advised that families and communities should seek timely medical and psychological help to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
