At least six people, including a police officer and a woman, have died in separate road crashes that occurred in Lagos and Yobe States.
The Lagos accident happened when a fully loaded truck fell on a tricycle in the Agric area of Ikorodu, killing two people instantly. The Yobe crash, which occurred along the Damaturu–Potiskum highway, claimed four lives and left 16 others injured.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident through its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, who said the accident involved a fully loaded 40ft container truck and a commercial tricycle.
According to him, the truck driver lost control while descending the slope, resulting in the container toppling over and crushing the tricycle.
“Preliminary investigations showed that the fully loaded container truck suffered brake failure while descending the Agric slope. Two people, including a police officer and a woman, lost their lives in the crash,” Adebayo stated.
He said operatives of LASTMA, police officers, and emergency responders immediately arrived at the scene to rescue trapped victims, adding that the bodies of the deceased had been handed over to their families.
“We have cleared the obstruction to restore traffic flow. The driver of the truck has been handed over to the police for further investigation,” he added.
In Yobe State, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that four people died and 16 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a crash involving a commercial vehicle along the Damaturu–Potiskum road.
The FRSC Sector Commander in Yobe, Dahiru Yusuf, said the accident occurred as a result of speeding and loss of control.
“Our preliminary report indicates that the driver was on high speed before he lost control of the vehicle. We recorded four fatalities and 16 injured victims, who have been taken to the General Hospital, Potiskum, for treatment,” Yusuf said.
He described the incident as avoidable, urging motorists to always observe speed limits and ensure proper vehicle maintenance, especially during the festive and dry seasons.
“Speed kills. Drivers must always exercise caution and patience to save lives. We have continued to sensitize road users on the importance of safe driving to reduce crashes on our highways,” the commander added.
The Federal Road Safety Corps also expressed concern that despite consistent awareness campaigns, many drivers still ignore traffic regulations, which continues to result in preventable deaths across the country.
