Suspected bandits have attacked Kurawa village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing two residents and abducting 15 others, including four nursing mothers and their babies.
The assailants, reportedly armed with sophisticated weapons, stormed the community around 11:30 pm. Among those killed was a community leader, Alhaji ISU Saraki.
Two others, including a member of the Sokoto State Community Guards, sustained injuries and are receiving treatment.
Confirming the incident, Hon. Sa’idu Ibrahim, a lawmaker representing the area, said, “The abductees include six women, four of whom are nursing mothers. Their babies were also taken, along with five teenagers aged between 14 and 15.”
Hon. Ibrahim attributed the surge in attacks to ongoing military operations in neighboring Zamfara State and a peace initiative in Katsina, which he said was unlikely to succeed because “the bandits are not willing to surrender their arms.”
He also noted that mobile police officers redeployed to the area failed to remain at their posts.
The attack follows a recent raid on Tarah community in the same LGA, where nine residents were abducted and one person injured after the local vigilante group was redeployed elsewhere.
Youths in Tarah reportedly mobilized to confront the attackers, preventing a more devastating assault.
