Lagos State authorities on Tuesday arrested 20 individuals engaged in street begging during enforcement operations in Ikosi Ketu and Mile 12.
The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed that the operation formed part of the government’s efforts to restore order and ensure public spaces are used responsibly.
According to Wahab, the latest sweep was carried out by the Lagos State Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) operatives along Ketu, Mile 12, Ikosi Road, and the 7UP corridor.
“The operation, which resulted in the arrest of twenty individuals engaging in street begging and related activities, is part of our ongoing mop-up exercise designed to curb environmental infractions, safeguard the public, and prevent activities that threaten safety, traffic flow, and sanitation,” Wahab said via his X handle.
He added that the ministry will continue enforcing the law while collaborating with social welfare agencies to provide rehabilitation where necessary.
Those arrested have been transferred to the appropriate authorities for profiling and further action. Wahab urged Lagos residents to support the initiative by reporting locations where street begging persists, emphasizing the state’s goal to maintain cleanliness, order, and safety for all.
The exercise follows a similar enforcement last month when 15 street beggars were apprehended in the same areas.
