Social media has become part of everyday life. We share birthdays, new jobs, family photos, travel plans, and achievements with ease. While this helps us stay connected, many people don’t realise that oversharing online can quietly expose them to cyber risks.

Cybercriminals often don’t “hack” accounts in the way movies show. Instead, they observe. They gather small pieces of information from social media and use them to impersonate victims, guess passwords, or design convincing scams. A single post announcing your new job, for example, can later be used in a fake email pretending to be from your workplace.

Oversharing can also put families at risk. Photos showing children in school uniforms, posts revealing daily routines, or check-ins that show exact locations can all be misused. Criminals rely on familiarity. The more they know about you, the easier it becomes to gain your trust.

How Oversharing Becomes Dangerous:

Posting your birthday can help hackers reset accounts.

Sharing travel plans tells criminals when you’re not home.

Uploading photos with ID cards, tickets, or documents exposes sensitive data.

Posting children’s school uniforms or locations puts them at risk.

Revealing phone numbers or addresses invites unwanted contact or fraud.

How to Stay Safer Online:

Set your social media accounts to private.

Avoid posting personal details like addresses or phone numbers.

Review and delete old posts that reveal too much.

Limit who can view your posts, stories, and contact details.

Avoid posting personal milestones in real time.

Ask yourself before posting: Would I be comfortable if a stranger saw this?

Note: Your life doesn’t need to be hidden but just protected.
