Three vehicles and other valuables worth millions of naira were destroyed on Friday following a fire outbreak at a fuel station in Kara area of Kishi, Irepo Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The vehicles affected were a Volvo truck with Lagos registration number AGG 731 GB, a Golf 3 with registration number KUT 403 AP, and an empty DAF truck bearing number plate GB0 14 AB.
Confirming the incident, the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Mr Moroof Akinwande, said the agency received a distress call from a resident, identified as Mr Yusuf.
Akinwande stated that a team of firefighters, led by Assistant Fire Superintendent Akande E. O., was immediately deployed to the scene.
According to him, “On arrival, it was discovered that a Volvo truck with registration number AGG Lagos 731 GB, a Golf 3 with registration number KUT 403 AP, and an empty DAF truck with registration number GB0 14 AB were already engulfed by fire.”
He explained that the fire service operatives acted swiftly and prevented the flames from spreading to the main filling station and nearby buildings.
“No casualty was recorded during the incident. Although properties worth millions of naira were destroyed, the filling station, nearby structures, and other valuables were successfully saved from being consumed by fire,” he said.
Akinwande added that preliminary findings showed the fire was caused by an explosion that occurred in the powerhouse, which ignited nearby combustible materials.
He urged filling station owners across the state to strictly adhere to fire safety guidelines and ensure regular safety checks of their facilities.
The fire service boss also stressed the importance of having functional fire extinguishers in commercial premises and private homes, noting that early response could prevent minor fire incidents from escalating into major disasters.
