A family of six, including both parents and their four children, reportedly died after inhaling fumes from a generator left running overnight in Ogale community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Sources in the community said the generator was kept inside the living room due to fear of theft and had been operating through the night into Sunday morning. Neighbours raised the alarm after noticing the family had not emerged from their home.
A community member who pleaded anonymity said, “They were found dead in various positions. It is a very unfortunate incident, and we are calling on the police to conduct a proper investigation.”
The incident was first shared on social media by Destiny John, who wrote, “A black Sunday indeed. Six died on the spot. No sickness. Oh God, let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end.”
When contacted, the Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the tragedy, stating, “Yes, I can confirm the incident. From information I received, the generator was inside the living room because they were afraid it would be stolen. Investigation is ongoing.”
Authorities have launched a probe into the deaths, urging residents to observe safety precautions when using generators indoors.
