Ibadan – Governor Seyi Makinde on Thursday inaugurated the maiden edition of the rotational Oyo State Council of Obas, appointing the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, as chairman for a two-year term.
The ceremony, held at the state capital, marked the first implementation of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs (Further Amendments) Bill, 2025, which aims to strengthen traditional leadership and promote collaboration among the state’s monarchs.
Notably absent at the inauguration was the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, who is expected to assume the chairmanship in the next rotation.
Governor Makinde, while addressing attendees, assured that the council would serve as a platform for unity and development, emphasizing that traditional institutions remain pivotal to the state’s governance and community relations.
Oba Ladoja, a former governor and seasoned politician, was crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland in September 2025, succeeding the late Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.
He expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him to lead the council, pledging to work collaboratively with other traditional rulers to advance peace and development across Oyo State.
The rotational system, as stipulated by the bill, allows the chairmanship to alternate every two years among the Olubadan of Ibadanland, the Alaafin of Oyo, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, ensuring equal representation and participation among the state’s traditional leaders.
