A former governor of Ogun State and Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has expressed confidence that Nigeria is steadily recovering from its past economic challenges.

Daniel stated this on Sunday, saying the worst of the country’s difficulties is over and that the nation is now on a path to improvement under Tinubu’s leadership.

Daniel made the remarks during the annual family Thanksgiving held at Abraham Tabernacle, Sagamu, Ogun State.

He commended President Tinubu’s economic reforms, including the floatation of the naira, removal of fuel subsidy, and other decisive measures aimed at tackling insecurity.

He said, “First and foremost, we thank God Almighty for His preservation. We must also thank the President and Commander-in-Chief for providing the enabling environment and the time to move the nation forward. In recent times, we have seen clear efforts to address the problem of insecurity.”

Daniel also noted that inflation, which had risen sharply, is now beginning to ease, and he expressed hope that the new year will bring more progress for the country.

He added, “Despite these difficulties, we must continue to thank God Almighty, and we hope that this new year will be an unforgettable one in our country. Nigeria, as I have said before, can only get better. The worst is over. I believe that gradually and steadily, things will continue to improve.”

The senator further highlighted the importance of prayers in overcoming the nation’s challenges.

He said that over 200 clergymen gathered at the event to pray for Nigeria, which he described as a sign that the country is making progress.

“We all need to pray more for our nation and our hardworking President so he can do so much more for the betterment of Nigeria,” Daniel said.

Daniel also spoke about the trust deficit in Nigerian politics, lamenting that many citizens are quick to brand politicians as thieves and liars.

He urged Nigerians to recognise that some leaders, including himself, remain committed to selfless service in the footsteps of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

He said, “We know that it is the season of politics, and some Nigerians often do not appreciate politicians. You have always believed that all politicians are thieves, so whenever we step forward, you think we are spinning lies. However, some of us follow the path of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whose works and selfless service remain an enduring legacy.”

Daniel also highlighted his ongoing socio-economic contributions in Ogun State, including the distribution of empowerment tools such as motorcycles, grinding machines, freezers and sewing machines. He said he has facilitated road projects and boreholes, and sponsored eye surgeries for over 4,000 people in the state.

He pledged to continue supporting government efforts to improve the lives of Nigerians.

The Thanksgiving service was attended by notable figures including lottery magnate Sir Adebukola Kensington, Mrs Bola Obasanjo, wife of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK, Ambassador Sarafadeen Tunji Ishola, Dr Olatokunbo Dosumu-Awolowo, and 2023 PDP gubernatorial candidate in the state, Oladipupo Adebutu.

Also present were NADECO chieftains Chief Ayo Opadokun and Senator Femi Okurounmu, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mr Femi Pedro, former Minister of State for Health, Dr Olorunmbe Mamora, and traditional rulers from across the state.
