The three students of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, who were abducted last week, have regained their freedom, the Benue State Police Command has confirmed.
In a statement, the police spokesperson, Catherine Anene, disclosed that the victims were rescued following a sustained operation by security forces. She assured that the command was determined to apprehend the perpetrators behind the abduction.
“On 3/3/2025, following a continuous trail of the kidnappers, the victims were released at about 21:34 hours and are currently receiving medical attention at Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi,” Anene stated.
The students’ abduction, which occurred on campus, had sparked outrage among their peers, leading to a massive protest that prompted the university authorities to shut down academic activities temporarily.
Commending the collaborative effort of security agencies, the Commissioner of Police, Hassan Yabanet, acknowledged the critical role played by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Intelligence Response Team from Abuja in securing the students’ release.
“While the investigation is ongoing, the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, Steve H. Yabanet FCID, psc (+), commends all officers involved in the operation, particularly the IGP Intelligence Response Team from Abuja and other security agencies in Benue State, for their commitment to this investigation,” the statement read.
The police chief further assured that those responsible for the crime would be brought to justice.
“He has pledged his commitment to arresting the perpetrators of this heinous crime,” Anene added.
