Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, describing his demise as the end of a glorious era for Nigeria.

The governor hailed the late Afenifere leader as a principled statesman, a tireless advocate of federalism, and one of the most devoted disciples of Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

In a statement issued in Abeokuta on Friday, Abiodun noted that Adebanjo’s life and contributions spanned Nigeria’s most defining moments, from the independence struggle to military rule and the return of democracy.

“The government and people of Ogun State could not have wished for a more glorious end for this unblemished apostle of federalism, good governance, and the defense of Yoruba interests,” the governor said.

Describing the 96-year-old Adebanjo as a beacon of integrity and a fearless critic of bad governance, Abiodun stated: “It does not matter where you stand in the political terrain:

Adebanjo was a man whose integrity you could not question. He lived through the finest and ugliest moments of Nigerian history, was hounded by the Establishment for his beliefs, and was even exiled for resisting autocracy and the suppression of the masses.”

Tracing his journey from an activist in 1943 under Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe to his role in the youth wing of the Action Group in 1951, Abiodun emphasized Adebanjo’s unwavering commitment to the principles of democracy and good governance.

“In particular, his strident advocacy for federalism was unmatched. He actively participated in constitutional conferences to reshape Nigeria’s federal structure and remained a voice of courage and a force for good,” he added.

The governor expressed gratitude for Adebanjo’s contributions to Ogun State and Nigeria, noting that his ideals would remain a guiding light. “We are still coming to terms with the reality of his passing, but we are profoundly grateful to the Almighty God for giving us such a gem in Ogun State. He will be sorely missed.”
