Ibadan – The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, Akeem Abas, has reassured journalists that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will only replace those who refuse to upgrade their digital skills.
Abas made this statement on Wednesday during a two-day AI training organized by the state council in collaboration with the American Open University, Nigeria.
The program, titled “Empowering Journalists with Artificial Intelligence for Ethical, Innovative and Future-ready Journalism”, brought together 120 journalists from across the state.
He emphasized that a digitally empowered journalist is not a threat to national development but a strategic partner in nation-building. With AI competence, journalists can diversify into media consulting, content strategy, data analysis, and advisory services for governments, institutions, and private organizations.
Abas further highlighted the opportunities AI offers, including establishing investigative journalism labs, digital storytelling studios, fact-checking platforms, and AI-assisted news services tailored to niche audiences.
He added that journalists could also serve as policy advisors, supporting government agencies and development institutions with research-driven insights.
“This training is not charity; it is capacity building. AI will not replace journalists, it will only replace those who refuse to learn,” Abas said.
He urged reporters to move from routine reporting to analytical, solution-oriented journalism that strengthens democracy and accountability.
Also speaking, Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, described AI as a welcome development, noting that it has the potential to improve governance and transparency.
He cited the state’s recent success in digitizing land transactions, which helped raise the Internally Generated Revenue to N103 billion in 2025, surpassing the total of the previous two administrations.
Dr Seyi Akanbi, acting Vice-Chancellor of American Open University, Nigeria, described AI as a powerful tool when used responsibly.
He warned against misinformation and urged journalists to use AI to maintain content integrity and professional excellence.
