Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, a respected historian and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State, has died after a brief illness. He was 64.

The Special Assistant to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Digital Media, Azeez Badmus, confirmed the development on X, where he expressed sorrow over the passing of the renowned scholar.

Badmus wrote, “Rest in power, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso, an illustrious son of Ede, Osun State, and Nigeria. What a sad loss.”

His younger brother, Olawale Oyeweso, also issued a statement confirming his death. He described the late academic as a mentor who left a deep imprint on students, colleagues and political associates.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and brother, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, who departed this life on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025, at the age of 64 after a brief illness,” the statement read.

He added that the professor, known for his contributions to the study of history and his dedication to public service, “touched the lives of countless students, colleagues, and political associates, among others.”

The family noted that he is survived by his wife, children and extended relatives. His burial will take place in his hometown of Ede by 4 p.m. today after the Asr prayer.

They prayed that Allah grants him eternal rest and provides strength to the family during this painful period.
