Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo has died after suffering a cardiac arrest in his office on Thursday. He was 60.
Sources said he slumped at the Government House in Yenagoa and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre.
A cardiologist confirmed him dead on arrival. His remains were later taken to a mortuary in Port Harcourt.
Ewhrudjakpo, a loyal ally of former Governor Seriake Dickson, served as Commissioner for Works for eight years before becoming deputy governor.
He was known for his grasp of construction and engineering issues despite being a lawyer by training.
His death shocked political stakeholders in Bayelsa, especially amid speculations that he was considering leaving the Peoples Democratic Party.
He had earlier declined to defect with Governor Douye Diri to the All Progressives Congress.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun described his passing as painful, saying he died while actively discharging his duties.
Abiodun noted that the late deputy governor remained dedicated to service even while battling illness.
He consoled Governor Diri, the family and the people of Bayelsa State, praying for strength for them in this difficult moment.
Abiodun said Bayelsa and Nigeria have lost a committed public servant whose life touched many.
