The political landscape in Delta State witnessed a major shift on Wednesday as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The development followed a closed-door meeting held at the Government House in Asaba, the state capital, where top political stakeholders convened to finalize the Governor’s next political move.

Governor Oborevwori, who emerged victorious in the 2023 gubernatorial election on the platform of the PDP, was received into the APC by top-ranking party officials. The move is being interpreted by analysts as a strategic realignment with significant implications for the 2027 general elections.

Confirming the defection, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, stated during a phone conversation, “Yes, the Governor has officially joined the All Progressives Congress. It was a decision taken after wide consultations in the best interest of Delta State.”

Although no official press briefing has been held yet, sources within the Government House say the Governor cited the need to reposition Delta for accelerated growth and development as a major factor in his decision.

“This is not just about politics; it is about the future of our state,” a senior aide to the Governor said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Governor Oborevwori believes aligning with the federal ruling party will enable Delta to benefit more from the centre.”
