Nigeria’s former president, Muhammadu Buhari, is dead. He passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in a clinic in London.
The announcement was made by his longtime spokesperson, Garba Shehu, in a post shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
“INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHIRRAJIUUN. The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” Shehu wrote.
Buhari, who ruled Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, was also a former military Head of State between 1983 and 1985. Known for his tough stance on corruption and his controversial policies, he remained a dominant figure in Nigeria’s political history long after leaving office.
His death has sparked reactions from across the country and beyond, with condolences pouring in from political leaders, international figures, and citizens remembering his legacy.
