Residents and business owners in Ibadan are grappling with severe power supply issues, as prolonged outages from the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) continue to disrupt daily activities and economic productivity.

From Lagelu to Ibadan North and other areas, complaints about erratic electricity supply have been widespread, leaving many frustrated and seeking alternatives.

Mr. John Adedapo, a resident of Ibadan North Local Government, lamented the situation, stating that he is on the verge of abandoning IBEDC’s services entirely. “The power situation is terrible. I can’t continue like this. It’s affecting everything,” he said.

A senior official in the Oyo State government, who resides in Kolapo Isola Estate, echoed similar concerns. “For weeks now, power supply in my area has been nothing short of abysmal,” he lamented.

Wale Owoade, a resident of Monatan, expressed his dissatisfaction with the distribution company’s service. “I have lived in my house for over two years, yet my total electricity bill hasn’t exceeded ₦10,000. That’s how little power we get,” he stated.

Entrepreneurs are also feeling the heat. Dr. Oyenike Adeleke, founder of the Ibadan Entrepreneur Network, revealed that the unstable electricity supply has damaged several of her home appliances. “The power supply is both erratic and weak. When we finally get light, it’s often low voltage, which has ruined my devices,” she lamented.

IBEDC Reacts

In response to the growing outcry, IBEDC acknowledged the concerns and assured residents that steps were being taken to address the situation.

“We understand the challenges currently being faced by our customers in Monatan, Kolapo Isola, Bodija, and other affected areas,” the power company stated. “The supply constraints are due to load allocation limits from the national grid, technical faults, and ongoing network upgrades.”

IBEDC further noted that efforts are underway to enhance service delivery. “We are actively working on maintenance, infrastructure upgrades, and stakeholder engagements to improve distribution efficiency. We appeal to our customers for patience and cooperation as we resolve these issues,” the statement added.

Experts Call for Urgent Solutions

Energy expert Prof. Adeola Adenikinju emphasized the need for urgent infrastructural improvements. “The problem could stem from collapsed poles, outdated equipment, or insufficient maintenance. IBEDC must prioritize investments in distribution infrastructure to prevent prolonged outages,” he advised.
