The National Youth Service Corps has expressed grief over the death of a female corps member in Abeokuta, confirming that one of its staff members is in custody as investigations continue.

In a statement issued on Saturday by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the scheme said it was “deeply saddened by the loss of a Corps Member under circumstances that are currently being investigated.”

The deceased, identified as Victoria Ariyo, was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area before her death. The case is being handled by the Ogun State Police Command.

The NYSC said, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and pray for the peaceful repose of her soul,” adding that “the matter is currently under investigation by relevant security agencies, and the individual concerned has been taken into custody.”

Police authorities also confirmed the development. The command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said, “I can confirm that the case of the demise of Victoria Ariyo is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department.”

Sources familiar with the incident alleged that the corps member died from complications linked to a medical procedure, while also claiming that an NYSC official, said to have been in a relationship with her, had been detained. However, authorities have yet to officially confirm the exact cause of death.

Reaffirming its position, the NYSC stated that it “maintains a strict code of conduct for its staff and Corps Members and will not condone any act of misconduct or abuse of office,” noting that it is cooperating fully with law enforcement agencies to ensure justice.

The scheme also urged the public to avoid speculation, stressing that due process must be allowed to take its course. It added that the welfare, safety, and dignity of corps members remain a top priority.
