Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, was on Monday remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre by a Federal High Court in Abuja over alleged cybercrime offences linked to social media posts about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The court, presided over by Justice Mohammed Umar, ordered Sowore’s remand pending the continuation of proceedings on Wednesday after dismissing his application seeking the judge’s disqualification from the case over alleged bias.

The Department of State Services is prosecuting Sowore on a two-count charge bordering on cyberstalking and criminal defamation following posts he made on social media in August 2025, in which he described Tinubu as a “criminal.”

The prosecution maintained that the posts violated provisions of the amended Cybercrimes Act, 2024, while Sowore pleaded not guilty and insisted his comments were protected by freedom of expression.

The remand order followed the revocation of Sowore’s self-recognition bail after the court held that his failure to appear for a previous sitting warranted the issuance of a bench warrant for his arrest.

Sowore, who is representing himself after his legal team withdrew from the case, is expected to continue his defence when proceedings resume on Wednesday.
