CP Aina Adesola has assumed duty as the 23rd Commissioner of Police in Delta State, replacing Assistant Inspector General of Police Olufemi Abaniwonda, who has been transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja following his recent promotion.

The development was contained in a press release issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe, and made available to journalists in Asaba.

Adesola was born on September 2, 1968, and hails from Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from Ondo State University and was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on June 10, 1994, after training at the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.

He first served in Delta State in 1996 at Ogwashi Uku and has since built a career spanning operational, administrative, investigative, and training roles across several commands.

His past postings include Divisional Police Officer at Aswani Division, Officer in Charge of Homicide at Edo State Command, Officer in Charge of X Squad Zone 2 Lagos, Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration in Abia State, and Commandant of the Police Training School, Oyin Akoko, Ondo State.

Adesola also served at the Force Headquarters as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the Department of Operations, as well as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and the State Criminal Investigation Department in Delta and Rivers states respectively.

Before his deployment back to Delta State in January 2026, he served as Deputy Commandant of the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos State.

In addition to his field experience, the new Commissioner of Police has attended several leadership and specialised courses within and outside Nigeria, including international law enforcement programmes in Botswana and the United States.

While taking over the leadership of the Command, Adesola pledged to strengthen existing security frameworks and promote proactive and community focused policing across the state.

He appealed to residents to continue to cooperate with security agencies and advised youths to stay away from crime.

In his handing over remarks, AIG Abaniwonda thanked the Delta State Government and residents for their support during his tenure and urged them to extend the same cooperation to his successor.

Adesola assured residents that under his leadership, the Delta State Police Command would remain professional and firm in ensuring that criminal activities are effectively curtailed across the state.
