Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has called for a thorough investigation into the seizure of a Nigerian-owned crude oil supertanker by the United States Government, warning that the incident highlights persistent threats to Nigeria’s maritime security and economic stability.
The tanker, Kipper, was intercepted by the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy on December 10 over allegations of involvement in crude oil theft, piracy, and other maritime crimes. Early reports linked the vessel to Thomarose Global Ventures Ltd, a company reportedly operating from Nigeria.
Reacting on Saturday via his X handle, Obi described the development as deeply troubling and a reflection of a larger crisis undermining the country’s economy, reputation, and prospects for its youth.
“My attention has been drawn to reports that the Nigerian-owned supertanker was seized by the United States authorities over allegations of crude oil theft and related illicit activities. While the full facts are still emerging, this development is deeply troubling and speaks to a much bigger crisis that has continued to undermine our national economy, our global reputation, and the future of our young people,” Obi said.
He stressed that Nigeria has been losing billions of dollars annually to crude oil theft, noting that weak institutions, lack of accountability, and a culture of impunity have allowed criminal networks to flourish. “When a nation’s most valuable resources are stolen in broad daylight, whether at home or on the high seas, its people inevitably suffer. Our schools deteriorate, our hospitals remain underfunded, insecurity worsens, and millions slip further into poverty,” he added.
Obi urged the Federal Government to tighten maritime security, reform regulatory agencies, and track every barrel of oil produced transparently. He also called for collaboration with international partners to establish facts and hold anyone complicit accountable.
“The seriousness of this incident should be appreciated and thorough investigation instituted to get to the root of the matter. This should serve as a wake-up call. Nigeria cannot continue on this path. We must rebuild our global image by demonstrating commitment to the rule of law, honest governance, and responsible management of national assets,” Obi emphasized.
The former Anambra State governor concluded by noting that Nigeria has the potential to be prosperous and respected, but achieving this requires competent and compassionate leadership that prioritizes the welfare of citizens.
