Chairman of the Southern Governors Forum and Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has described the passing of Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark as a significant loss to Nigeria but also as a glorious conclusion to an era that shaped the nation’s history.

Clark, the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) and former Federal Commissioner for Information, was hailed by Abiodun as one of the most influential figures from the South-South geopolitical zone and a tireless advocate for the rights of the Niger Delta people.

According to him, Clark’s demise marks the end of an unforgettable era in Nigeria’s political, social, and educational landscape.

In a statement issued from Abeokuta on Tuesday, Abiodun acknowledged the deep sorrow caused by Clark’s passing but emphasized that his monumental contributions across various spheres of national life would remain a lasting legacy.

“The exit of Pa Edwin Kiagbodo Clark at 97 marks a watershed in Nigerian history,” Abiodun said. “As someone who lived through colonial rule, the struggle for independence, and the post-independence challenges, Chief Clark was the very embodiment of Nigeria’s historical journey. He served this nation with unwavering dedication for nearly seven decades and stood as one of the most fearless and progressive voices in our history.”

Reflecting on Clark’s early years in politics, Abiodun highlighted his election as a Councillor for Bomadi in 1953 and his role within the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), describing him as a patriot of unmatched devotion.

“His commitment to the Nigerian cause was evident from his days as a student at Holborn College, London, where he was a vocal member of the West African Students’ Union,” Abiodun stated.

“He played key advisory roles in the Mid-Western Region and later served as a commissioner under Military Governors David Ejoor and Samuel Ogbemudia before being appointed Federal Commissioner for Information by General Yakubu Gowon in 1975.”

Abiodun added that Clark’s profound impact on education, citing his instrumental role in establishing the Mid-West College of Technology, which later evolved into the University of Benin. His lifelong passion for education was further exemplified in the founding of Edwin Clark University, which stands as a testament to his enduring vision.

“Despite his advancing years, Chief Clark remained a vigilant voice for justice, consistently writing letters to key national institutions whenever he sensed danger in the country’s political landscape,” Abiodun noted. “He was a courageous fighter till his last breath, rallying the Southern and Middle Belt peoples for restructuring while advocating for peace and national unity.”

The governor further remarked on the emotional significance of Clark’s passing, coming shortly after the death of another statesman, Pa Ayo Adebanjo.

“The outpouring of emotions following his transition is a testament to his influence and the depth of his contributions to our national development. Nigeria has indeed lost a patriot of the finest breed,” Abiodun concluded.
