The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, has warned residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse on road medians across the state, saying offenders would be arrested and prosecuted.
Elemide issued the warning during plenary at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, with particular reference to residents along Idi-Aba Road and other parts of the state.
He said the practice of dumping waste on road medians was not only unhealthy but also contributed to environmental degradation and air pollution.
The Speaker stated, “Residents must desist from dumping refuse on road medians. Anyone caught engaging in such acts will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
He called on relevant government agencies to step up efforts in maintaining public infrastructure, urging the State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, as well as the Ministry of Environment, to ensure that road medians are properly maintained and cleared of weeds.
Elemide noted that clean and well maintained medians would improve the aesthetic value of the environment and promote public health.
During the plenary, the Speaker also raised concerns over the welfare of candidates sitting for examinations conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
He expressed dissatisfaction with the current arrangement, which often leaves candidates waiting in open spaces under harsh weather conditions.
According to him, prolonged exposure to sun and rain poses serious health risks to candidates and reflects poorly on examination management in the country.
He said, “It is not acceptable for candidates to be subjected to harsh weather conditions while waiting to write examinations. Their safety and wellbeing must be prioritised.”
Elemide urged the examination body to adopt more humane and effective measures in managing candidates, including the provision of waiting sheds at examination centres.
He added that providing basic shelter for candidates would not only protect them from adverse weather but also create a more organised and conducive examination environment.
The Speaker reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to promoting public health, environmental safety, and the welfare of residents across the state.
