The Economic Community of West African States has declared a state of emergency across the region following rising political instability, recent coups and failed mutinies in member countries.
The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, made the announcement on Tuesday during the fifty fifth session of the Mediation and Security Council at ministerial level in Abuja.
He said the latest developments show the need for a deeper review of the democratic direction of the region and stronger commitment to collective security.
Touray said the situation calls for serious reflection on the future of governance in West Africa and renewed efforts to safeguard peace.
He explained that the emergency move was driven by concerns over growing threats that could undermine regional stability.
The meeting was convened after a wave of coups and attempted mutinies in the sub region, which has continued to raise concerns among leaders and security experts.
