A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has died after an alleged sexual encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday at the hotel in Esan West Local Government Area of the state, where Uwuigbe had lodged with the woman.

According to reports, the lecturer allegedly slumped and died in the hotel room shortly after the encounter. The woman was said to have left the room briefly to purchase water at his request and, upon her return, found him lying lifeless.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Tuesday, saying three persons had been arrested in connection with the death.

The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the police received a report at about 8pm on October 5 that Uwuigbe, a lecturer at AAU, had lodged at a hotel and engaged the services of a 21-year-old sex worker.

She said the hotel owner, manager and the woman were subsequently taken into custody as investigations continued.

Ikoedem added that the deceased’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, the university confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff but said the incident occurred outside the institution.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, told PM News that the incident was a private matter involving the lecturer and did not occur on the university campus.

“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.
