The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has filed a fresh criminal charge against the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
In an eight count charge, the anti graft agency accused Emefiele of stealing and unlawfully acquiring 753 housing units located at Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09, Lokongoma District of Abuja. Court documents related to the charge were sighted by journalists on Saturday.
The new charge followed Emefiele’s move to reclaim the estate after approaching the Court of Appeal to set aside an earlier ruling that handed control of the property to the Federal Government.
The EFCC also alleged that the former CBN governor held billions of naira in proxy accounts while in office.
According to the commission, Emefiele conspired with his personal assistant, Eric Ocheme, who is reportedly on the run, to acquire the properties in August 2021.
The commission further alleged that between January and December 2019, a sum of ₦167 million, suspected to be proceeds of fraud, was kept in a proxy account linked to Emefiele at Zenith Bank in Abuja.
