The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has begun investigating two men over the alleged possession of 899,800 dollars in counterfeit currency in Kano State.

In a statement posted on X on Saturday, the commission said the suspects were arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency along Maiduguri Road in Wudil, Kano. It added that the two men were travelling in a commercial Golf 3 vehicle to Kila village in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State when they were intercepted.

“Upon search, the NDLEA team discovered the suspected fake notes concealed inside a Maggi Star seasoning carton. The suspects and exhibits were subsequently handed over to the EFCC for further investigation,” the statement said.

The EFCC identified the suspects as Abubakar Hussaini and Sahabi Adamu, noting that they are currently in its custody.

According to the commission, preliminary findings revealed that the suspects were transporting the counterfeit currency to Kila village to meet one Muhammad Walo, who was expected to introduce them to Mallam Mashiru, described as a self proclaimed spiritualist claiming to be capable of transforming counterfeit dollars into genuine currency through ritual prayers.
