A 39-year-old fugitive, Kabiru Oyedun, who escaped from the Ilesa Correctional Centre in Osun State, has been rearrested by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command.

Oyedun, one of the inmates who fled the medium-security custodial centre through a breached perimeter fence, was tracked and apprehended in the Ayobo area of Lagos State.

Confirming the arrest, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said officers attached to the Ayobo Division effected the arrest around 5:30 pm on Tuesday, May 21, 2025.

According to Hundeyin, “Kabiru Oyedun was trailed and arrested in Ayobo on May 21, 2025, at about 5:30 pm by operatives of the Command. This success is largely due to the proactive and preventive measures put in place to ensure that criminal elements do not take refuge in the state.”

It was gathered that Oyedun will be handed over to the relevant correctional authorities in Lagos before being transferred back to Osun State, where he originally escaped.

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) had earlier confirmed that a section of the perimeter wall of the Ilesa facility collapsed following a heavy downpour, enabling several inmates to flee.

In response to the jailbreak, the NCoS launched a manhunt and announced a N5 million reward for anyone who provides useful information leading to the recapture of the fleeing inmates.

“To encourage public participation, the Nigerian Correctional Service wishes to inform the general public that a reward of N5 million is being offered to anyone who provides useful information that leads to the recapture of the fleeing inmates from the Medium Custodial Centre, Ilesha, Osun State,” the Service had stated.
