The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has announced a ban on the sale, purchase, or use of firecrackers, knockout explosives, and other unauthorized pyrotechnic devices in the lead-up to Christmas celebrations.
FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, explained that the decision was prompted by concerns over the growing circulation of these items across the Territory.
“Firecrackers pose serious safety hazards, including injuries, fire outbreaks, and widespread panic. They also create opportunities for criminal elements to mask unlawful activities,” Adeh said.
She added that the indiscriminate use of these items disrupts public peace and puts vulnerable members of the community especially children, the elderly, and people with underlying health conditions at risk.
The Police have warned that operatives have been instructed to enforce the directive strictly, and violators will be arrested and prosecuted.
Residents are encouraged to comply with the ban and report anyone found selling or using firecrackers to the nearest police station or through FCT Police emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08068587311.
