The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment after convicting him on multiple counts of terrorism.
Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Thursday, ruling that Kanu’s broadcasts, including calls for sit-at-home orders in South-Eastern states, amounted to acts of terrorism.
The court sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on counts one, two, four, five, and six, which carry the death penalty, while counts three and seven were ordered to run concurrently.
During the proceedings, Kanu was removed from the courtroom after becoming unruly and raising objections to the judgment.
The judge also dismissed three fresh motions filed by Kanu, describing them as unmeritorious.
Justice Omotosho noted that Kanu’s repeated threats of violence and his declaration as a member of a proscribed organization justified the convictions.
