The Federal Government has announced that Friday, April 3, and Monday, April 6, 2026, will be public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebration.
The declaration was made on Wednesday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.
In the statement, Tunji-Ojo congratulated Christians across Nigeria and in the diaspora on the occasion of Easter.
The Minister urged Nigerians to embrace the virtues of selflessness, forgiveness, forbearance, and love, as exemplified by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.
He further called on citizens to uphold tolerance and community spirit, describing these values as essential for national unity.
Tunji-Ojo also reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to policies that promote national rebirth, economic growth, and shared prosperity for all Nigerians.
In a related development, the Minister revealed that over 840,000 foreigners are currently staying in Nigeria beyond the validity of their visas.
He disclosed this on Tuesday during a television interview, noting that the figure was identified through an upgraded immigration tracking system.
According to him, irregular migration not only involves Nigerians living abroad without proper documents but also affects Nigeria internally, with many foreign nationals failing to leave upon visa expiry.
The Minister said the number of visa overstayers now stands at over 840,000, involving people from different countries, bringing the figure close to one million.
