Vice President Kashim Shettima on Friday commissioned the Sulaiman Adebola Adegunwa Trauma Centre located within the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu, declaring that the Federal Government has approved the establishment of 8,880 new Primary Healthcare Centres across Nigeria under the Comprehensive Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative.

Speaking at the event, Shettima emphasized the federal government’s commitment to revamping healthcare delivery in Nigeria, especially in areas of trauma, oncology, and infectious diseases.

“The administration is investing in the National Health Insurance Scheme that gives all Nigerians hope and a digital information management system that ensures data-driven diagnosis”.

“This trauma centre fits into that plan. It brings the federal government’s commitment to building a health sector that works for all, especially in moments of distress when accidents strike and time is critical,” he said.

The Vice President called on private sector players, philanthropists, and well-meaning Nigerians to contribute meaningfully to national development, especially in the healthcare space.

“We are a nation of immense promise, but also of immense problems. That is why the government alone cannot shoulder these problems,”

“We need more philanthropists and foundations to take a cue from Otunba Adegunwa and rise beyond personal achievements to build a virile nation.”Shettima noted.

He added that Adegunwa has written his name in gold.

“History remembers only those who serve. This facility will serve generations yet unborn, and Chief Adegunwa has chosen to light a candle rather than curse the darkness.”

Governor Dapo Abiodun, in his remarks, said the trauma centre would significantly enhance Ogun State’s emergency response capacity, especially given its location along major highways like the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Sagamu-Benin Expressway.

“When I assumed office in 2019, this hospital was the first I visited. Its condition was terrible, and we had to declare a state of emergency”.

“We inaugurated a panel led by Dr. Yemi Onabowale of Redington to recommend how to reposition the facility, and we’ve since implemented those recommendations”, Abiodun recalled.

The Governor said the newly inaugurated trauma centre aligns with his administration’s vision of universal access to quality and affordable healthcare.

“Healthcare remains a priority for us because the foundation of any thriving society is the ability to provide timely, specialized, and inclusive medical services”.

“This trauma centre marks a significant milestone. It complements our ongoing efforts to reposition the health sector for better service delivery”, he stated.

Abiodun also commended Chief Adegunwa for his generous donation and commitment to the health and well-being of the people of Ogun State.

“Chief Adegunwa has consistently demonstrated an enviable commitment to the well-being of others,” he added.
“His efforts in education, healthcare, and community development culminate in this state-of-the-art trauma centre—an enduring gift to humanity.”

In his address, Chief Sulaiman Adebola Adegunwa said the donation of the trauma centre was his way of giving back to society and showing gratitude to God for preserving his life till age 80.

“This is my humble way of appreciating God for sparing my life. I believe this trauma centre will further support the government’s efforts in delivering quality healthcare services to the people,” the octogenarian industrialist said.
