In a stirring display of selflessness, the immediate past Student Union President of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Folahan Olayiwola, has donated the entirety of his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) allowance to support patients at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta.
Olayiwola, who is currently serving in the Ogun State capital, saved all his monthly stipends amounting to a total of ₦640,000 and used the funds to purchase three wheelchairs and four pairs of crutches for the hospital.
Explaining the motivation behind his action, Olayiwola said:
“I did this not because I have more than enough, but because I believe true leadership involves compassion and sacrifice. I wanted to do something impactful that would outlive my NYSC year.”
He added that the gesture was his way of contributing to a system where patients in need often struggle to access essential mobility aids.
“Many of these patients are from poor backgrounds and can’t afford basic medical equipment. If I could help even a few regain their mobility, then my service year has been worthwhile,” he noted.
The Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, which received the donations, expressed appreciation for the uncommon gesture. A senior hospital official, who asked not to be named, described the donation as “a rare show of humanity and leadership.”
“We often receive support from institutions, but for a young corps member to give all his stipends for others, this is extraordinary. We are very grateful.”
