The Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ogun State Council has announced the death of a veteran broadcaster, former Director of Programmes at the Ogun State Television, OGTV, and ex Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Ogun State chapter, Alhaji Akeem Akintunde.
The announcement was contained in an official statement released on Tuesday night by the Ogun State Council of the NUJ and signed by its Secretary, Bunmi Adigun.
Akintunde reportedly passed on after a protracted illness, bringing to an end a long and impactful career in journalism and sports broadcasting that earned him respect across the media landscape in Ogun State and beyond.
Throughout his professional journey, he served with distinction at OGTV, where he rose to the position of Director of Programmes, contributing significantly to content development, programming standards, and the growth of broadcast journalism in the state.
He was also deeply involved in sports journalism, a field he was widely known and celebrated for, having served as Chairman of SWAN in Ogun State, where he mentored younger journalists and promoted professionalism within the association.
Colleagues described him as a versatile broadcaster, a respected sports guru, and a man who lived and breathed journalism and sports until his final moments, admired for his depth of knowledge, discipline, and unwavering commitment to the profession.
The NUJ expressed deep condolences to his family, friends, and the entire media community, noting that his death marks the end of an era in Ogun State broadcasting.
According to the union, burial arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
The NUJ also called on journalists, associates, and well wishers to pray for the repose of his soul and to remember his family at this difficult time, asking that they be granted the strength to bear the loss.
