No fewer than four persons died on Sunday after a commercial bus crashed into a faulty stationary truck along the Lokoja Ajaokuta road in Kogi State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident, saying seven other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The Kogi State Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr Tenimu Etuku, told journalists that the accident occurred at Jimgbe Community in Ajaokuta Local Government Area and involved an 18 seater Toyota commercial bus.

According to him, the bus, with Abuja registration number ABC 232 XA, was travelling from Enugu to Abuja when the crash happened.

Etuku explained that the driver attempted to avoid a head on collision with an oncoming truck but ended up ramming into another truck that was parked by the roadside due to a fault.

“The driver, in trying to avoid a head on collision with an oncoming truck, crashed into a faulty stationary truck, which led to the unfortunate incident,” he said.

He added that FRSC rescue teams arrived promptly at the scene and evacuated the injured victims to the Kogi State Specialist Hospital for treatment.

“The injured were rescued and taken to the specialist hospital, while the corpses of the four dead persons were deposited at the morgue of the same hospital,” Etuku stated.

Describing the crash as very unfortunate, the sector commander advised motorists to exercise caution at all times, stressing that an open road does not always translate to safety.

“There is a clear difference between a free motoring environment and a safe motoring environment. Drivers must remain alert and cautious while driving on the highways,” he said.

The FRSC has continued to urge road users to observe traffic rules and drive responsibly to reduce road accidents across the state.
