A fire outbreak on Sunday gutted four out of five blocks of three bedroom flats at Number 13, Nelson Mandela Street, Asokoro, in Abuja.
Residents said the fire was first noticed on the solar panels mounted on the roof of the building before it rapidly spread and engulfed most parts of the structure.
The Head of the Federal Emergency Management Department Search and Rescue Team, Mr Monday Addie, said the incident was reported at about 1 pm, prompting an emergency response.
“No life was lost in the incident, but four flats were completely burnt,” Addie said.
Furniture, clothing, food items and other personal belongings belonging to residents were destroyed by the inferno, leaving the affected flats in ruins.
The building is owned by a former Zamfara State governor, Senator Ahmed Yerima.
Emergency responders from the Federal Emergency Management Department, the Federal Fire Service, the FCT Fire Service, the National Emergency Management Agency and the FCT Police Command were deployed to the scene to contain the fire and secure the area.
As of the time of filing this report, officials were still assessing the extent of the damage and ensuring the safety of residents in the area.
