Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, has called on journalists to expose and publicly shame perpetrators of domestic violence, emphasizing that the menace must be confronted head-on.
Speaking at the 2025 Ramadan Lecture organized by the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Information Chapel at the Mini Arcade Ground, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Salako-Oyedele stressed that domestic violence affects everyone—whether as witnesses, victims, or perpetrators.
“Allah forbids domestic violence. If we abhor something, we must take action—whether with our hands, our voices, or our minds. This is not just about silent disapproval; we must actively work against it,” she said.
She urged journalists to use their platforms to highlight domestic violence cases, make perpetrators ashamed, and ensure that such acts are widely condemned.
“Let’s blacklist all perpetrators. Name and shame them. Anyone who engages in domestic violence should not be spared but exposed,” she added.
The deputy governor also commended the NUJ Information Chapel for its consistent efforts in organizing the Ramadan lecture and praised the guest lecturer for his insightful discourse, praying for divine rewards upon him.
The Chairman of the occasion, who is also the National President of ACCOMORAN, Alhaji Samsideen Apelogun, described domestic violence as a crisis destroying many homes, affecting women, and leaving children traumatized.
“Cases of domestic violence in Nigeria are alarming. We all have a role to play in stopping this ugly trend,” Apelogun said.
In his lecture, the Chief Imam of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Dr. Abdul Hakeem Abdul Lateef, categorized domestic violence into physical, psychological, sexual, and self-induced violence, noting that many perpetrators act out of childhood trauma, mental illness, broken homes, anger issues, peer pressure, and religious differences.
“One of the major reasons domestic violence persists is that perpetrators do not suffer enough consequences for their actions. Without strict punishments, the cycle will continue,” he stated.
He called for stricter penalties, increased public awareness, and community intervention to curb the rising cases of domestic abuse.
Earlier in his welcome address, Chairman of NUJ Information Chapel, Comrade Femi Osipitan, reaffirmed the chapel’s commitment not only to members’ welfare but also to their spiritual well-being.
He urged members to show love, promote peace, and uphold the teachings of Allah, not just during Ramadan but beyond.
