Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from his position, citing health reasons. His resignation takes immediate effect.
According to a statehouse press release signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the minister submitted a letter of resignation to President Tinubu on December 1, 2025. President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude for Badaru’s service to the nation.
Badaru, 63, served as the governor of Jigawa State for two terms from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment as Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.
His resignation comes at a critical time, shortly after President Tinubu declared a national security emergency, promising further details on the initiative in the coming days.
President Tinubu is expected to notify the Senate of Badaru’s successor later this week.
