A housewife, Hussaina Musa, has approached a Shari’a court sitting in Rigasa, Kaduna State, seeking the dissolution of her marriage to Hussaini Umar, accusing him of constantly abandoning her whenever they have a misunderstanding.
Hussaina told the court on Tuesday that her husband left their home without food or financial support for over a month, forcing her to return to her parents.
“Each time we quarrel, he leaves me alone and disappears,” she lamented. “He abandoned me for more than a month with no food, no care. I had no choice but to go back to my family. I can’t take this maltreatment anymore. I want the court to end this marriage.”
However, the defendant, Hussaini Umar, denied the allegation of abandonment. He explained to the court that his absence was work-related, claiming he had to travel to another town for employment.
“It’s true we had a misunderstanding during the fasting period,” he said. “But I reported the matter to her elder brother, and we’ve been trying to resolve it since then. I didn’t abandon her. I only went to work.”
Umar pleaded with the court to give him more time to reconcile with his wife.
Presiding Judge, Malam Muhammad Adamu, adjourned the case to May 8, encouraging both parties to explore the option of settling out of court. He also directed the complainant to bring witnesses at the next hearing if reconciliation efforts fail.
“The court encourages peaceful settlement where possible,” the judge stated. “But if it doesn’t work, the complainant should come prepared with witnesses.”
