Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Shamsideen Adio, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), for allegedly beating a dispatch rider to death in the Tapa Street area of Lagos Island.
According to police sources, a dispute erupted between Adio and the dispatch rider over claims that the rider had scratched the official’s vehicle. The disagreement reportedly escalated when Adio, joined by colleagues, allegedly assaulted the rider.
A witness, journalist and Facebook user Chris Nwandu, who shared a video of the incident, said the attack was unprovoked and violent. “A popular Lagos Island NURTW top official by the name Shamsideen Adio mercilessly beat a dispatch rider to a pulp on Wednesday for obstructing his way while driving. He was joined by his friends and colleagues, battering the victim as they pleased,” Nwandu stated.
The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, was not immediately available for comment as calls to her line went unanswered at the time of filing this report.
A police officer privy to the incident confirmed that the victim later died from injuries sustained during the attack. “The victim died from the injuries, and the suspect has been arrested. He is now at the State Criminal Investigation Department,” the source said.
