The Edo State Police Command has begun a manhunt for a man identified as Timothy Gilbert, who allegedly bathed his girlfriend, Angela Ogah, with acid and fled the area.
The Command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident on Wednesday.
He explained that the attack occurred at Ihovbe Quarters in Ikpoba Hill earlier this month.
According to him, “The Command has commenced a manhunt for the arrest of the suspect, and I am sure he will be brought to justice.”
Yamu said the couple had been having issues related to infidelity claims before the attack.
He urged people in troubled relationships to walk away rather than stay in situations that may turn violent, adding that love should never be forced.
Ogah, 40, is currently battling for her life at a private hospital. Her lawyer, John Izegaegbe, told journalists that she could barely speak due to the severity of her injuries.
“We want the suspect to be arrested. The victim is in severe pain. She could barely talk when journalists visited her,” he said.
Izegaegbe added that a petition has been sent to the State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, calling for urgent action to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
He appealed to authorities not to delay in tracking Gilbert, who has been on the run since the attack.
“Gilbert is currently on the run after bathing Ogah with a substance suspected to be acid. We are currently on the authorities to effect his arrest without delay,” the lawyer said.
Police say efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest the suspect.
